Description

This Berry Trifle is a delightful layered dessert combining fresh strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries with sweet raspberry jam, creamy whipped cream, and silky cream cheese, all nestled between crisp lady fingers. It's an elegant yet simple dish requiring no baking, perfect for entertaining or a refreshing treat during warmer months.

Ingredients

Fruit and Jam

  • ¾ cup (8 oz) seedless raspberry jam
  • 1 quart (1½ pounds) strawberries, hulled and sliced into ¼-inch pieces
  • 1 pint (12 oz) raspberries
  • 1 pint (12 oz) blueberries

Cream Mixture

  • 1½ cups heavy whipping cream, cold
  • 16 ounces cream cheese, at room temperature
  • 1¾ cups confectioners' sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Base

  • 1 (7 oz) package crisp lady fingers (savoiardi biscuits)

Garnish

  • Fresh mint sprigs (optional)
  • Reserved whole berries from the fruit mix

Instructions

  1. Reserve berries: Set aside a few whole berries from the fruit mixture for garnishing the trifle at the end.
  2. Prepare berry-jam mixture: Microwave the raspberry jam in a large bowl for about 1 minute until hot and liquidy. Add the fresh strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries and toss gently to coat all the berries with the warm jam. Let this mixture sit while preparing the cream layers, stirring occasionally to distribute the juices.
  3. Whip the cream: In a clean large bowl, whip the cold heavy cream using a mixer until stiff peaks form. Set aside the whipped cream.
  4. Make cream cheese mixture: In another large bowl, beat the softened cream cheese with the confectioners' sugar until the mixture is smooth and creamy. Beat in the vanilla extract. Next, add one-third of the whipped cream and beat until incorporated. Finally, fold in the remaining whipped cream gently using a rubber spatula to keep the mixture light and airy.
  5. Assemble the trifle: In a 9-inch (14-cup capacity) trifle dish or glass bowl, create the layers starting with a base layer of lady fingers broken into pieces as necessary. Spoon a third of the berry-jam mixture, including some of the juices, over the lady fingers. Follow with a third of the cream cheese mixture. Repeat the layering two more times, alternating berry mixture and cream layers, ending with the cream cheese mixture on top. For the final cream layer, leave a 1-inch border around the edge so the colorful fruit layer underneath is visible.
  6. Garnish and chill: Decorate the top of the trifle with the reserved whole berries and fresh mint sprigs if desired. Refrigerate the trifle for at least 8 hours or overnight to allow the flavors to meld and the lady fingers to soften before serving.

Notes

  • Allowing the trifle to chill overnight improves the flavor and texture by letting the lady fingers absorb the berry juices and cream.
  • Using cold heavy cream is essential for achieving stiff peaks when whipping.
  • Room temperature cream cheese blends more smoothly into the sugar to create a creamy filling.
  • This trifle is best served chilled and is an excellent make-ahead dessert for parties.
  • Fresh mint sprigs add a lovely color contrast and a subtle refreshing flavor but are completely optional.
