Ingredients
Roasted Garlic
- 8-10 garlic cloves, peeled
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- Pinch of salt
Garlic Butter Custard
- ½ cup butter, melted (113g)
- 1 egg
- ¼ cup milk (60g)
- ½ tsp salt
- ½ tsp paprika
- 2 tbsp chopped fresh parsley
Bread and Toppings
- 12 King's Hawaiian Original Hawaiian Sheet Rolls, kept in full sheet form (or a French baguette of similar size)
- 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- Chopped parsley and chili flakes, for garnish
Instructions
- Roast the Garlic: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Toss the peeled garlic cloves with olive oil and a pinch of salt. Place them in a mini oven-safe pot with a lid or cover with foil, then roast for about 20 minutes until the garlic is soft and golden.
- Mash Roasted Garlic: Use a fork to mash the roasted garlic cloves until smooth. Set aside for use in the garlic butter custard mixture.
- Prepare Garlic Butter Custard: In a bowl, combine the mashed roasted garlic, melted butter, egg, milk, salt, paprika, and chopped parsley. Whisk thoroughly until all ingredients are fully incorporated.
- Pre-bake Bread: Reduce oven temperature to 350°F (175°C). Using a sharp knife, carefully slice the sheet of bread rolls into two halves horizontally. Place them on a large baking sheet and bake for 8-10 minutes until they turn lightly golden and crispy.
- Coat the Bread with Custard: Transfer the garlic butter custard to a larger shallow pan. Dip each baked bread half into the custard, making sure they are well coated on all sides.
- Bake Coated Bread: Place the custard-coated bread halves back on the baking sheet. Bake in the oven at 350°F for 15-18 minutes until golden and cooked through.
- Add Cheese and Broil: Evenly sprinkle shredded mozzarella cheese over the baked bread. Switch the oven setting to broil/grill and broil for approximately 5 minutes, or until the cheese melts fully and develops a golden color.
- Finish and Serve: Remove from oven and garnish with fresh chopped parsley and chili flakes. Slice the cheesy garlic bread and serve warm for a delicious savory treat.
Notes
- Using King's Hawaiian rolls adds a slight sweetness that complements the savory garlic and cheese nicely, but you can substitute with a French baguette if you prefer a crustier texture.
- For a stronger garlic flavor, add extra roasted cloves or use raw minced garlic in the custard, but roasted provides a milder, sweeter garlic flavor.
- Watch the bread closely while broiling to prevent the cheese from burning.
- This cheesy garlic bread pairs well with pasta dishes, soups, or as a party appetizer.
