Description

Enjoy thick and juicy hamburgers infused with sweet, deeply caramelized onions that add a rich, savory flavor to each bite. Perfect for a cookout, these American-style burgers are topped with melted provolone cheese, combining classic ingredients for a delicious main dish.

Ingredients

Caramelized Onions

  • 1 large sweet onion, diced
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp butter

Burgers

  • 1.5 lb ground beef (preferably 85% chuck)
  • 1 tbsp mayo
  • 2 tsp seasoned salt, divided
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ¼ tsp black pepper
  • 4 slices provolone cheese

Instructions

  1. Caramelize the Onions: Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and add the olive oil and butter. Add the diced onion and cook, stirring occasionally, for about 30 minutes until the onions become deeply golden brown and sweetly caramelized. Remove from heat and set aside.
  2. Prepare the Burger Mixture: In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, mayo, 1 teaspoon of seasoned salt, garlic powder, black pepper, and the cooled caramelized onions. Use clean hands to gently mix the ingredients until just combined, then shape the mixture into 4 evenly sized hamburger patties.
  3. Season the Patties: Sprinkle the remaining 1 teaspoon of seasoned salt evenly on both sides of each patty to enhance the flavor.
  4. Grill the Burgers: Preheat a grill to medium-high heat. Cook the patties for about 3 to 5 minutes per side, or until they reach your desired level of doneness. Just before taking them off the grill, place a slice of provolone cheese on each patty and let it melt slightly.
  5. Serve and Enjoy: Remove the burgers from the grill and serve immediately with your favorite burger toppings and buns for a delicious meal.

Notes

  • Cooking onions slowly over medium heat is key to achieving deep caramelization and maximum sweetness.
  • Do not overwork the meat mixture to keep the burgers tender and juicy.
  • Use a meat thermometer to ensure burgers are cooked to a safe temperature (160°F for ground beef).
  • Feel free to swap provolone for your favorite burger cheese such as cheddar or Swiss.
  • The burger patties can be made ahead and refrigerated before grilling.
