Description

This Cinnamon Roll Casserole is a delightful twist on traditional cinnamon rolls, combining the flavors of soft, sweet dough baked with a spiced custard base. Perfect for breakfast or brunch, this casserole is baked until golden brown and drizzled with maple syrup and icing, creating a warm, comforting dish that serves 10.

Ingredients

Custard Mixture

  • 4 eggs
  • ½ cup half and half (or heavy cream)
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • ¼ teaspoon cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg

Casserole

  • 2 tubes refrigerated cinnamon rolls (16 rolls total)
  • 2 cinnamon roll icing packets
  • ¼ cup maple syrup (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350° Fahrenheit to prepare for baking the casserole.
  2. Prepare Baking Dish: Grease a 9x13-inch casserole dish with cooking spray to prevent sticking.
  3. Mix Custard: In a medium bowl, whisk together the eggs, half and half (or heavy cream), vanilla extract, cinnamon, and nutmeg until fully combined. Set aside this custard mixture.
  4. Prepare Cinnamon Rolls: Using scissors, cut the cinnamon roll dough into 1-inch pieces and place them evenly in the prepared casserole dish.
  5. Combine: Pour the custard mixture evenly over the cinnamon roll pieces in the dish, making sure all pieces are coated.
  6. Bake: Place the casserole dish into the preheated oven and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and slightly crunchy.
  7. Remove from Oven: Take the casserole out of the oven carefully to avoid spilling the hot custard.
  8. Drizzle Toppings: While still warm, drizzle the maple syrup and the cinnamon roll icing packets evenly over the casserole. Let it rest for 5-10 minutes to allow flavors to meld and the casserole to set.
  9. Serve: Slice the casserole into portions and serve warm for the best texture and flavor experience.

Notes

  • You can substitute half and half with heavy cream for a richer custard.
  • Maple syrup is optional but adds a lovely complementary sweetness.
  • Use scissors to easily cut the cinnamon roll dough into uniform pieces.
  • Allow the casserole to rest before serving to enhance flavor and texture.
  • Serve warm for the best enjoyment; can be reheated gently if needed.
