Description
This rich and creamy Favorite Chocolate Buttercream is a classic frosting perfect for cakes and cupcakes. Made with unsalted butter, confectioners’ sugar, cocoa powder, and a touch of vanilla, it offers a smooth, fluffy texture and intense chocolate flavor that’s easily adjustable for sweetness and consistency.
Ingredients
Buttercream Ingredients
- 1 cup (16 Tbsp; 226g) unsalted butter, softened to room temperature
- 3 and 1/2 cups (420g) confectioners’ sugar
- 1/2 cup (41g) unsweetened natural or dutch-process cocoa powder
- 3 Tablespoons (45ml) heavy cream or milk, at room temperature
- 1/8 teaspoon salt
- 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
Instructions
- Beat the Butter: Using a handheld or stand mixer fitted with a paddle or whisk attachment, beat the softened butter on medium speed until it becomes creamy and smooth, about 2 minutes.
- Add Dry and Wet Ingredients: Add confectioners’ sugar, cocoa powder, heavy cream, salt, and vanilla extract to the creamed butter. Beat on low speed briefly for 30 seconds to incorporate ingredients without making a mess.
- Whip the Frosting: Increase mixer speed to high and beat the mixture for 1 full minute until the frosting is light and fluffy.
- Adjust Consistency and Flavor: If the frosting is too thin, add up to 1/4 cup more confectioners’ sugar or cocoa powder. If too thick, add another tablespoon of heavy cream or milk. Taste the frosting and add another pinch of salt if desired to balance the flavors.
- Store or Use: Use immediately to frost your baked goods, or cover tightly and refrigerate for up to 1 week or freeze for up to 3 months. When ready to use from the freezer or fridge, thaw in the refrigerator, then rebeat on medium speed until creamy. Add a splash of heavy cream or milk if needed to adjust consistency.
Notes
- For best results, use unsalted butter at room temperature to ensure smooth mixing.
- You can use natural or dutch-process cocoa powder depending on your flavor preference.
- The frosting consistency can be adjusted by adding more sugar or cream as needed.
- Store in an airtight container to prevent the buttercream from drying out or absorbing fridge odors.
- Rewhipping after refrigeration or freezing restores the creamy texture and smoothness.
