Description

This Garlic Mashed Potatoes recipe offers a creamy, flavorful side dish perfect for any meal. With tender red potatoes mashed together with butter, sour cream, milk, and a robust garlic flavor from both fresh and powdered garlic, these mashed potatoes are creamy with a slight texture, not over-mixed, providing a comforting and delicious accompaniment to meats, vegetables, and more.

Ingredients

Potatoes

  • 3 pounds red potatoes (peeled if desired)

Mash Ingredients

  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 8 ounces sour cream
  • ½ cup whole milk
  • 1 tablespoon minced garlic
  • 1-2 teaspoons garlic powder (to taste)
  • 1-2 teaspoons salt (to taste)
  • ¼ teaspoon cracked black pepper (or 1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper)

Instructions

  1. Cook the Potatoes: Choose your preferred method to cook the potatoes: stovetop or Instant Pot.
  2. Prepare Potatoes on Stovetop: Cut the potatoes into quarters and place them in a large pot. Cover with water so it comes about 1 inch above the potatoes. Bring water to a boil over high heat, then reduce to medium-high and boil for 10-12 minutes until the potatoes can be easily pierced with a fork. Drain the water and transfer potatoes to a large bowl.
  3. Prepare Potatoes in Instant Pot: Place a metal rack in the bottom of the pressure cooker and add 1 cup of water. Place the potatoes on the rack. Cover and set the vent to the SEAL position. Set the cooker to PRESSURE COOK or MANUAL for 8 minutes. Once done, quick release the pressure by turning the knob to the VENT position. After the float valve drops, remove the lid, drain water, and transfer potatoes to a large bowl.
  4. Combine Ingredients: Add butter, whole milk, sour cream, minced garlic, garlic powder, salt, and cracked black pepper to the hot drained potatoes in the bowl.
  5. Mash the Potatoes: Using a potato masher or a hand mixer (recommended), mix the potatoes just until combined. Keep a few lumps for texture and avoid over-mixing to maintain creaminess.
  6. Adjust Seasoning and Serve: Taste the mashed potatoes and add more salt or pepper if needed. Serve warm and enjoy your creamy, garlicky mashed potatoes!

Notes

  • Peeling the potatoes is optional; red potatoes have thin skins that add texture and color if left on.
  • Use a hand mixer for creamier texture, or a potato masher if you prefer some lumps.
  • Adjust garlic powder and salt to taste based on your preference.
  • For richer mashed potatoes, you can substitute some whole milk with cream.
