Description

Loco Moco is a classic Hawaiian comfort food featuring a juicy hamburger patty served over steamed white rice, topped with a savory mushroom and onion gravy, and finished with a sunny side up egg. This hearty dish combines umami flavors and textures for a satisfying meal perfect for any time of day.

Ingredients

Hamburger Patties

  • 1 1/2 lb ground beef
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 1/2 tsp seasoning salt
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper

Gravy

  • 1 1/2 cup beef stock
  • 4 tsp shoyu (soy sauce)
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tsp ketchup
  • 5 tsp cornstarch
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter (divided)
  • 1/2 medium sized sweet onion (optional)
  • 3/4 cup sliced mushroom (optional)

Egg

  • 2 eggs
  • 1 slice butter (for frying eggs)

Other

  • Cooked white rice (to serve)
  • Green onions (for garnishing)

Instructions

  1. Prepare Hamburger Patties: In a large bowl, combine ground beef, Worcestershire sauce, seasoning salt, garlic powder, and black pepper. Mix well to evenly distribute the seasonings.
  2. Form Patties: Take a handful of the meat mixture and roll it into a ball, then press it down to create a patty about one inch thick. Smooth edges to avoid cracks. Make the patties large as they will shrink while cooking.
  3. Cook Patties: Heat a pan over medium heat. Fry patties for 3-5 minutes on each side until they are cooked through and well browned. Remove patties and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess grease.
  4. Prepare Gravy Mixture: In a bowl, whisk together beef stock, shoyu, Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, and cornstarch until cornstarch is fully dissolved and mixture is smooth.
  5. Sauté Onions and Mushrooms: Using the same pan, melt 1 tablespoon of butter. Add sliced onions and cook for about a minute to caramelize. Then add mushrooms and sauté for 1-2 minutes until softened. This step is optional; if you prefer, skip onions and mushrooms.
  6. Cook Gravy: Melt the remaining butter in the pan. Pour in the gravy mixture and stir continuously until it thickens and begins to simmer, incorporating flavors from sautéed onions and mushrooms.
  7. Cook Eggs: In a separate pan, melt a slice of butter over medium heat. Crack the eggs into the pan and cook sunny side up or to your preferred doneness. Set aside once cooked.
  8. Assemble Loco Moco: On each serving plate, place a generous scoop of hot white rice. Layer a hamburger patty on top, then generously drizzle the mushroom-onion gravy over the patty. Top with a cooked sunny side up egg and garnish with chopped green onions.
  9. Serve: Serve the Loco Moco hot and enjoy this hearty Hawaiian classic.

Notes

  • You can omit the onions and mushrooms if you prefer a simpler gravy.
  • Adjust seasoning salt and Worcestershire sauce to taste in the patties and gravy for preferred flavor intensity.
  • Sunny side up egg can be substituted with scrambled or over-easy per preference.
  • Use freshly cooked white rice for best results; day-old rice may alter texture.
  • Make sure patties are thick enough to remain juicy after cooking and shrinking.
