Description

This homemade focaccia bread pizza recipe combines the fluffy, golden texture of traditional focaccia with classic pizza toppings for a delightful and easy-to-make meal. Featuring a simple dough that rests and rises in the pan, it's then baked to perfection and topped with marinara, melted mozzarella, and your favorite toppings. Perfect for a casual family dinner or entertaining guests, this recipe brings the best of both worlds together in one delicious dish.

Ingredients

Dough Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups warm water
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil (plus additional for greasing pan and drizzling)
  • 1 1/4 teaspoons salt
  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 Tablespoon instant (rapid rise) yeast

Toppings

  • 3/4 cup store-bought or homemade marinara sauce
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • Assorted pizza toppings, such as pepperoni, mushrooms, and olives

Instructions

  1. Prepare the pan: Grease a 13x9-inch metal baking pan with 1 1/2 tablespoons olive oil to prevent sticking and allow the dough to crisp on the edges.
  2. Mix the dough: In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, combine warm water, 3 tablespoons olive oil, salt, flour, and yeast. Beat on medium speed for 1 minute just until the ingredients are combined and form a very sticky batter.
  3. Let the dough rise: Transfer the sticky dough into the prepared pan. Cover it with plastic wrap and let it rest at room temperature for 1 hour, allowing it to puff up and rise.
  4. Preheat and poke dough: Preheat the oven to 375ºF (190ºC). Use your fingers to poke dimples all over the surface of the risen dough, then drizzle 2 tablespoons of olive oil over the top to help develop a golden crust and add flavor.
  5. Bake the focaccia: Bake the dough in the preheated oven for 20 to 25 minutes, or until golden brown. After baking, remove the pan from the oven and allow the focaccia to cool for 5 minutes while still in the pan.
  6. Top and bake again: Carefully transfer the focaccia bread from the pan onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Spread marinara sauce evenly over the surface, followed by shredded mozzarella and your choice of assorted pizza toppings.
  7. Melt cheese and finish: Return the topped focaccia to the oven and bake for an additional 5 minutes or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  8. Serve: Slice the focaccia bread pizza and serve immediately for the best texture and flavor.

Notes

  • The dough will be very sticky; avoid adding extra flour to keep the focaccia light and airy.
  • Letting the dough rest and rise in the pan ensures a fluffy texture and proper crust development.
  • You can customize the toppings based on your preferences or dietary restrictions.
  • Use a metal baking pan for even heat distribution and a crispier crust.
  • For a stronger olive flavor, use extra virgin olive oil for drizzling and greasing.
