Ingredients
Meat and Seasonings
- 1 lb ground beef (90% or 93% lean)
- 1-2 jalapeño peppers (to taste)
- 1 teaspoon salt (or to taste)
- ¾ teaspoon onion powder (divided)
- ¾ teaspoon garlic powder (divided)
- Freshly ground black pepper (to taste)
Cream Cheese Mixture
- 3 oz cream cheese
- Half of the diced jalapeños (from above)
- ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
- ¼ teaspoon onion powder
Cooking and Assembly
- ½ tablespoon olive oil (for cooking the burgers)
- 3 burger buns (potato bread buns recommended)
- Sliced tomato
- Lettuce (washed and patted dry)
- Ketchup (to taste)
- Sliced cheese (sharp cheddar recommended)
Instructions
- Prepare Jalapeños: Decide between 1 or 2 jalapeños depending on desired spice level. Wearing kitchen gloves, slice jalapeños in half, remove seeds and pith, then finely dice them as small as possible for even flavor distribution.
- Make Cream Cheese Mixture: In a small to medium bowl, combine 3 oz cream cheese with half the diced jalapeños, ¼ teaspoon garlic powder, and ¼ teaspoon onion powder. Mix thoroughly with a fork until well blended.
- Season Ground Beef: In a large bowl, combine 1 lb ground beef with the remaining half of diced jalapeños, 1 teaspoon salt, ½ teaspoon each of garlic powder and onion powder, and freshly ground black pepper to taste. Gently mix with your hands until ingredients are evenly incorporated without overworking the meat.
- Form Patties with Filling: Divide the seasoned beef into six equal parts. Shape three large, thin patties slightly larger than your buns. Evenly spread 1.5-2 tablespoons of the cream cheese mixture on each patty, keeping a ½ inch border around edges. Top with the remaining three patties and carefully pinch edges to seal the cream cheese inside completely.
- Cook the Burgers: Heat a medium-large skillet over medium heat and add olive oil. Once hot, place the stuffed patties in the skillet, cover with a lid, and cook for 3-4 minutes per side or until patties reach desired doneness.
- Finish with Cheese: Place a slice of sharp cheddar cheese on each patty and allow it to melt while the burger finishes cooking off the heat or covered.
- Assemble and Serve: On each burger bun, layer lettuce, sliced tomato, a cheese-topped patty, and your preferred amount of ketchup or other toppings. Serve immediately for the best flavor and texture.
Notes
- Wear disposable gloves when handling jalapeños to avoid irritation from the capsaicin.
- Removing seeds and pith reduces heat; leave some in if you prefer spicier burgers.
- Do not overwork the meat to keep patties tender and juicy.
- Sealing the patties carefully prevents cream cheese from leaking during cooking.
- Potato bread buns complement the flavors well, but any soft burger buns work.
- Adjust cooking times based on patty thickness and preferred doneness.
