Description

A quick and flavorful Korean Beef Bowl recipe featuring ground beef simmered in a savory soy sauce and brown sugar mixture, spiced with sesame oil and red pepper flakes. Perfect for a 15-minute weeknight dinner, this dish is garnished with green onions and sesame seeds for an authentic Korean-inspired meal.

Ingredients

Sauce

  • 1/4 cup brown sugar (packed)
  • 1/4 cup reduced sodium soy sauce
  • 2 teaspoons sesame oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon crushed red-pepper flakes (or more to taste)
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger

Beef Mixture

  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 3 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 2 green onions (thinly sliced)
  • 1/4 teaspoon sesame seeds

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together the brown sugar, reduced sodium soy sauce, sesame oil, crushed red-pepper flakes, and ground ginger until well combined, creating a flavorful marinade and simmering liquid for the beef.
  2. Cook Garlic and Beef: Heat the vegetable oil in a large cast iron skillet over medium-high heat. Add the minced garlic and stir constantly for about 1 minute until fragrant, being careful not to burn it. Add the ground beef and cook for 3 to 5 minutes, breaking it apart with a spoon to crumble evenly as it browns. Drain any excess fat from the skillet.
  3. Simmer with Sauce and Green Onions: Stir the prepared soy sauce mixture and thinly sliced green onions into the cooked beef until well combined. Allow the mixture to simmer gently for about 2 minutes until heated through and flavors meld together.
  4. Serve and Garnish: Serve the Korean beef immediately, garnished with additional green onions and a sprinkle of sesame seeds for added texture and presentation.

Notes

  • For a spicier dish, increase the amount of crushed red-pepper flakes.
  • Serve over steamed rice or noodles for a complete meal.
  • Can be garnished with sliced cucumbers or kimchi for added freshness.
  • Use lean ground beef for a lower fat version.
  • To make it gluten-free, substitute soy sauce with tamari or coconut aminos.
