Description

A classic Patty Melt recipe combining juicy seasoned ground beef patties, melted Swiss cheese, and sweet caramelized onions between buttery toasted sourdough bread for a comforting and flavorful sandwich perfect for any meal.

Ingredients

Mayonnaise Mixture

  • 4 tablespoons salted butter, softened
  • 4 tablespoons mayonnaise

Beef Patties

  • 1 pound 80/20 ground beef
  • 2 teaspoons onion powder
  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 1½ teaspoons kosher salt, divided
  • ½ teaspoon freshly cracked black pepper
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce

Sandwich Assembly

  • 8 slices sourdough bread
  • 8 slices Swiss cheese
  • 1½ cups caramelized onions

Instructions

  1. Make mayonnaise mixture: In a small bowl, combine the softened salted butter and mayonnaise until smooth and well blended. Set aside.
  2. Make the patties: In a medium bowl, mix the ground beef with onion powder, garlic powder, 1 teaspoon of kosher salt, freshly cracked black pepper, and Worcestershire sauce until combined. Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape each into thin patties roughly the shape of the bread slices. Sprinkle the patties with the remaining ½ teaspoon kosher salt.
  3. Cook the patties: Heat a skillet over medium heat. Cook the patties in batches if needed, about 3-4 minutes per side until they are cooked through and no longer pink in the middle. Transfer cooked patties to a plate.
  4. Spread the mayonnaise mixture: Spread one side of each sourdough bread slice with 1 tablespoon of the butter-mayonnaise mixture evenly.
  5. Assemble the sandwiches: Wipe out the skillet and return to medium-low heat. Place half the sourdough slices buttered side down. Top each with one slice of Swiss cheese, a cooked beef patty, and a generous amount of caramelized onions. Add another slice of Swiss cheese on top, and then cover with the remaining bread slices, buttered side up.
  6. Cook the sandwiches: Place the assembled sandwiches in the skillet. Cook about 4-5 minutes per side until the bread is golden brown and the cheese has melted, pressing gently with a spatula if desired. Cut each sandwich in half and serve immediately.

Notes

  • Using 80/20 ground beef ensures juicy flavorful patties.
  • Caramelized onions add sweetness; prepare them by slowly cooking sliced onions until golden brown before assembling.
  • Use a medium or medium-low heat when toasting the sandwiches to avoid burning while melting the cheese thoroughly.
  • Butter spread on the outside of the bread creates a rich, crispy crust.
  • For extra flavor, Worcestershire sauce is added to the beef mixture.
