Made from a rich dough enriched with milk, honey, and butter, these rolls are baked to a golden brown and brushed with melted butter for a delicious finish reminiscent of the famous restaurant rolls.
Ingredients
Dough Ingredients
- 1 cup whole milk (227 grams, warm to 105-110°F)
- ½ cup unsalted butter (113 grams, melted and divided into ¼ cup portions)
- 2¼ teaspoons active dry yeast (7 grams, 1 envelope)
- ¼ cup granulated sugar (50 grams)
- 3 tablespoons honey (66 grams)
- 1 large egg (50 grams, room temperature)
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt (3 grams)
- 4 cups all-purpose flour (480 grams)
For Serving
- Texas Roadhouse Butter (optional, for serving)
Instructions
- Combine Ingredients: In the bowl of a stand mixer, combine the warm milk, ¼ cup of melted butter, active dry yeast, sugar, and honey. Let the mixture sit for a few minutes until it becomes foamy, indicating the yeast is activated.
- Add Egg and Salt: Beat in the room temperature egg and kosher salt until fully incorporated into the mixture.
- Add Flour: Gradually add the flour, one cup at a time, mixing on low speed after each addition to combine well.
- Knead Dough: Continue mixing on low speed for about 5 minutes to knead the dough until smooth and elastic.
- Hand Knead: Turn the dough out onto a clean counter and knead it a few more times by hand to develop the gluten.
- First Rise: Transfer the dough to a large bowl, cover with a towel, and place it in a warm spot to rise for 1 hour until doubled in size.
- Roll Out Dough: Punch down the risen dough gently and turn it onto a floured surface. Roll the dough into a rectangle approximately 1 inch thick.
- Shape Rolls: Cut the dough into 24 evenly-sized squares (around 41 grams each) and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or lightly greased.
- Second Rise: Cover the rolls with a towel and allow them to rise in a warm place for another hour. During the last 30 minutes of this rising period, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Bake Rolls: Bake the rolls in the preheated oven for 14-16 minutes, or until they are golden brown on top.
- Brush with Butter: Immediately after baking, brush the rolls with the remaining ¼ cup melted butter to give them a rich, glossy finish.
- Serve: Serve warm with optional Texas Roadhouse Butter or honey butter for an authentic experience.
Notes
- Ensure milk is warm but not hot to activate yeast properly without killing it.
- Use fresh yeast for best rising results.
- Rising times may vary depending on ambient temperature; dough should double in size.
- Brushing with butter immediately after baking keeps the crust soft and flavorful.
- These rolls freeze well; thaw and warm before serving.
